The Energy of the Echo

Stand at the mouth of a cavern and call out. What comes back is not your voice. It's a reflection of it, carried through the vast openness of the unknown and returned to you a little softer and a little blurred. An echo is always a dilution of the original tone.

I've been sitting with that image since coming home from my apprenticeship camp in Maui.

Back to the Beginning

On this path, apprenticeship moves through gateways. You start at the beginning: the maintenance keeper, the toilet cleaner, the one who carries and sweeps and serves. When you're good at one thing, you move to the next.

I'll be honest. At 52, after more than thirty years of facilitation and healing work, going back to the very first doorway has been humbling. Part of me wanted to rush through, to get back to where I was. But that wanting is exactly the attachment this path asks us to release.

I was first initiated into the Eastern Qigong arts and moving meditation back in 1997, through a dear friend who remains a mentor, healer and associate to this day. The teaching is simple and not easy: release the mind's grip on the outcome, let go of attachment, attune to the field, and allow yourself to be moved by the vital force. You stop pushing. You let what animates you do the moving.

Maui brought that teaching alive in me again, and life wasted no time handing me a test.

A Sign

The invitation to the next apprenticeship gathering, in the Amazon, arrived while I was on the road. I turned to my wife and said I wouldn't accept unless the universe gave me a very clear sign.

The moment the words left my mouth, my phone dinged. It was a message from my dear colleague Georgina Walker: a radio producer had reached out asking for my details. The invitation was to step into a studio I've known before, in front of a host I've known before.

I've worked in that world for years, including clearing energy for young performers on talent shows who were facing bullying, stage fright, and the enormous pressure of being judged. I know how powerful those rooms are. A good judge can see the X factor in a person, the authentic original tone. On a different day, the same eyes can find someone's deepest weakness and go straight for it. They can make you or break you.

And I realised the test wasn't whether I'd be liked. The test is whether I stay in my own tone.

Your Uniqueness Is the Original Tone

We live in an age of echoes. Influence, imitation, copying what works for someone else. Every copy is a dilution. The more we perform what we think others want, the further we drift from our own frequency.

The work is to find your authenticity and raise your vibration to a level where you're no longer entangled in the approval of the room. Not by hardening, but by remembering who you are. Your uniqueness is the original tone. Don't trade it for a softer, blurrier reflection.

Static in the Space

I trained as an electrician before I became a healer, and I still think like one. When a space keeps glitching, when the electronics fail and the systems keep falling over, I look at two layers.

The first is the physical. What's outside the building? Are there high-tension power lines nearby, large solar installations, substations? What's the cabling like? Is there surge protection and filtering on the switchboard to take out spikes? What does the electromagnetic field of the space actually look like? Good energetic work respects the real, measurable world first.

The second layer is human. Nervous energy creates static. When a whole team is walking on eggshells, terrified of making a mistake and working hard to keep the mood of the room steady, that tension doesn't disappear. It fills the space. Doubt is a contraction, a pulling back from the flow of life, and a room full of contraction feels heavy and charged.

Clearing a space means attending to both: the wiring and the people, the land and the atmosphere, what was here before and what we're carrying in now.

The Sacredness of the Work

This work is sacred to me. It's not a performance, a bit of smoke waved around for a laugh, or a chant to fill a segment. When I enter a space to clear it, I come with respect for the land, for the people, and for the forces we're working with. I ask for the same respect in return, and I believe healthy boundaries are a gift to everyone in the room. Clarity about why we're gathering, what's being asked, and how the work will be honoured keeps the energy clean for all of us.

Stop Walking on Eggshells

So here's what I'm practising, and what I'd offer anyone holding tension right now, whether you're facing a big stage, a demanding boss, or just a difficult day.

Stop walking on eggshells. Feel for the animating life force that's already moving through you. Trust that what's guiding you is good. Let the moving meditation of your life carry you forward, one gateway at a time, without needing to rush back to where you think you should be.

You are connected. You are protected. You are guided. And you are one.

Sing your original tone. Let the echo be what it is.
