Post 1 of 5: The Physics of Being Watched
What stage fright is really telling you about your energy
For several years I worked backstage on some of Australia’s biggest televised talent competitions.
I wasn’t a vocal coach. I wasn’t a stylist. I had five minutes with a contestant before they walked out in front of millions of viewers — and my job was to clear the field around them.
What I was clearing wasn’t self-doubt in the psychological sense. It wasn’t nerves in the ordinary sense either. It was something more fundamental. It was the weight of being watched — by producers, by judges, by a viewing public who had already formed opinions — and the way that watching had collapsed the energetic field of a capable, talented human being into something tight, reactive, and unreachable.
Five minutes. Field cleared. They walked out and performed.
I watched this happen repeatedly, across years, across different contestants, different formats, different levels of experience. And what it confirmed for me was something I had already understood from decades of healing work, but had never seen demonstrated quite so cleanly:
The field you are observed from determines what you are capable of doing.
What quantum physics figured out
There is a principle in quantum mechanics called the observer effect. At the subatomic level, the act of observation — of measuring, of watching — changes the behaviour of the thing being observed. The particle responds to the watcher.
Most people hear this and file it under “interesting physics.” They don’t apply it to their own lives, their own bodies, their own relationships.
But here is what thirty years of working in the energetic field has shown me: this is not just a laboratory phenomenon. It is the lived experience of every human being, operating at every level of their existence.
You are always in a field of observation. The question is: what is that field carrying?
Two kinds of watching
There are fundamentally two ways you can be observed.
The first is watching that carries expectation of failure. It is a gaze that has already decided. It waits for the mistake. It holds you in a fixed image of limitation, and because the field responds to observation, you begin to organise yourself around that image. Your nervous system contracts. Your capability becomes inaccessible. You perform badly — not because you lack the ability, but because the quality of the watching has shaped the field you are performing inside.
This is stage fright. Not nerves. Not lack of preparation. A field problem.
The second is watching that carries held regard. It is the gaze of a coach who knows what you are capable of. A parent who has never stopped believing in you. A practitioner who holds your capacity for healing as a given, not a hope. In that field, the body does what it was designed to do. It opens. It moves freely. It accesses what it knows.
The difference between these two experiences is not talent. Not willpower. Not mindset. It is the field of observation you are standing inside.
This is happening in your life right now
The backstage environment of a televised talent show is an extreme version of something that is operating in your life constantly.
At work. In your relationships. In your family. In the way you approach your own health. In the way you look at a part of your body that isn’t working the way you want it to — with the quiet, anxious, already-concluded gaze of someone who expects it to fail.
That gaze is a field. And your body, your nervous system, your capacity to heal and to function — all of it is responding to it.
The invitation of this series is simple: let’s look at who is watching you, and what they are expecting. Because that’s where healing actually begins.
Not in the symptom. In the observer.
Where to start
If this landed somewhere in you, your field is already responding.
Pull a card. The oracle draw at Spatial Energetics gives you direct access to all 88 cards — including the Connected. Protected. Guided. card, which is the energetic antidote to everything described in this post. It’s free. It takes two minutes. Go to spatialenergetics.com.au/oracle-draw and see what your field draws toward.
Or book a session. If you read this and felt something recognise itself — a relationship, a pattern, a part of your body that’s been held in a field of failure-expectation — that recognition is enough to start. Book here.
Next in the series: The observer you carry inside — how the way you watch your own body determines what it can do.
